We seem to have been bombarded over recent years with advice about “Superfoods”, juicing, and their benefits to our health.
One of the many things that we can find on the list of “Superfoods” is beets.
Beetroot has a high sugar content and is a good source of fiber. It also contains folates, nitrates, betaine, magnesium and other antioxidants.
Some of the health benefits of eating beetroot appear to be the lowering of blood pressure and a boost to energy.
- One study suggests that consuming beetroot juice may lower blood pressure. This could be due to the presence of nitrates.
- Another study suggests beetroot juice may improve exercise performance.
These are some of the claims made by Superbeets, as well as providing a healthy circulation.
So why would I want to use a powdered beetroot to make a juice, rather than the real thing?
And with so many supplemental products on the market, why Superbeets? Read this review.

What Is HumanN Superbeets?
Superbeets is one of a range of products from HumanN, previously known as Neogenesis. A relatively young company founded in 2009.
The company was founded by Joel Kocher, a marketing executive and Dr.Nathan Bryan, who holds a Biochemistry Degree from the University of Austin, Texas.
There are also a number of consultants on what they call their Science Advisory Board. They claim to have “unparalleled level of expertise and experience in the area of nutrition, functional foods, supplements, and in Nitric Oxide research”.
Their products appear to concentrate on the production of Nitric Oxide in the body. More about Nitric Oxide in a while.
This Product is a concentrate of beet crystals in two flavours, black cherry or original claiming to be “highly concentrated and scientifically formulated to provide optimum levels of essential Nitric Oxide”.
They are freeze dried using a process patented by the company and are non-GMO. It’s packaging claims it is a circulation superfood.
One teaspoon of the powder, the recommended daily intake, claims to provide the nitric oxide equivalent of three whole beets. It says it can help with:
- Nitric oxide production.
- Healthy circulation.
- Healthy blood pressure levels.
- Improved energy and stamina.
SuperBeets Ingredients
- Non-GMO beetroot powder
- Fermented non-GMO beetroot powder
- Natural apple flavor
- Malic acid
- Magnesium ascorbate
- Stevia leaf extract
Looking at the list of ingredients there don’t appear to be any additives. But how do these ingredients live up to SuperBeets claims?
How SuperBeets Work?
This supplement concentrates highly on the production of nitric oxide and how it benefits our health. They don’t however tell us how much nitric acid is provided from the recommended daily intake.
Nitric oxide is a gas that can help widen blood vessels and improve circulation. Consequently, nitrates in pill form, may be prescribed to treat angina and coronary heart disease. Improved circulation can lead to lower blood pressure.
I searched and found many scientifically proven studies of the beneficial effects of nitrates and nitric oxide, but I could not find any clinically proven evidence on the HumanN website to backup their claims.
There are a few scientific studies covering beetroot juice supplements and performance in athletes, and one stating that:
Beetroot supplementation is a new and exciting area of research that to date has been shown to induce favourable effects in several facets of health and disease.
SuperBeets Side Effects
There are some side effects associated with beets and their supplements:
- Can cause low calcium levels and kidney damage.
- Not known whether it is safe to consume when pregnant or breastfeeding.
- May exacerbate kidney disease.
- As it claims to lower blood pressure, if this is something you suffer from it may not be advisable to take Superbeets.
As with anything, if you are unsure check with your doctor before using it.
SuperBeets Reviews & Complaints
I found numerous customer reviews for SuperBeets. At the time of writing this of 446 reviews on Amazon.com.
- 259 were positive
- 187 negative
Most of the customer complaints seem to revolve around the taste, even from those that the rate the product highly on all other fronts. It appears that it’s a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it!
Debra Quick and her husband tried the product and, she writes:
This product tastes horrible. Could not tell any difference in energy level. My husband tried it as well with same results. No more energy and a bad taste that stayed with us ALL Day. Would not recommend this to anyone.
Also, as Debra has stated, a lot of the negative comments reflect around the fact that the product did not deliver what was promised. No increased energy levels seeming to be the main one.
On the other hand, there are those customers that love SuperBeets.
Dread Pirate Roberts also writes:
Super Beets makes a dramatic difference in how my wife and I feel throughout the day. We can really tell when we forget to take it, in the morning. We’re both fine with the taste, and it dissolves completely.
The question of being able to dissolve the product as directed has cropped up quite a few times, some people say the powder forms clumps.
Other observations made from these reviews are that delivery timescales are met. Some people have seen a reduction in their blood pressure, albeit a few of these have stated they have made other changes to diet and exercise.
Douglas Oran Watts states:
Great product, had to quit taking my blood pressure medication.
Another issue seems to be with the amount of product in the container, several people have written that the container is half empty, so maybe size matters and a smaller container would suffice. This even comes from people that are happy with the product overall.
Jackwoolen posted:
Am happy with the results I’m getting with this product, especially since I have been plagued with poor circulation and anemia for years. Only drawback is the price. Very expensive and very little product in the container.
Jack has raised the subject of price, and quite a few people have commented that it is expensive, however there are those that are happy to pay the cost for the results they get.
SuperBeets: Packages, Prices & Where To Buy
You can buy SuperBeets direct from HumanN.
You have the option of a one time purchase priced as follows for either original or black cherry flavour.
Also available as a one time purchase are individual 5g sachets of Black Cherry flavor for $14.95. No Shipping & Handling fees are shown, however they will apply a $2 discount at the checkout if you buy the sachets with another product.
HumanN also give you the option to subscribe monthly, free of any additional charge for either subscription or shipping. If you sign up it costs:
Interestingly HumanN also offer a product called BeetElite. Same ingredients as Superbeets but in a 200g canister for $39.95.
They market this as an ‘Endurance Superfood”, and advise 2 scoops a day, as opposed to 1 scoop a day of SuperBeet. By my calculations, if these products are the same and just being marketed differently the BeetElite as a single canister is cheaper, if you only use a scoop a day.
See below how the official site looks like.
Refunds and Returns Policy
HumanN offer a 90 day money back guarantee from the date of order.
You do however have to call their customer services to get a Return to Manufacturer Authorization number (RMA). If this number is not on the outside of the returns packaging they will not refund. Also the item must be returned, used or unused, and in good condition in the box/bottle/canister.
There were a few comments surrounding returning an empty canister in good condition among the customer reviews that I looked at.
It is also worth noting that when you visit the website, there is a link underneath the order section stating 100 percent satisfaction guaranteed. If you visit the hyperlink it state:
So if you’re not completely satisfied with any of our products, simply return them to us within 90 days of your order date, no questions asked.
No mention of an RMA or retaining packaging unless you actually take the time to look at the policy.
